Teams
The El Cerrito Tennis Club sponsors approximately ten United States Tennis Association (USTA) women's, men's, and mixed doubles teams and five Bay Area Ladies League (BALL) teams. Captains' names and phone numbers are in the club roster mailed to all members, or you can email Margo Takemiya, who will put you in touch with the right person.
The USTA website has up-to-date results and standings for the Arlington Park teams.
All teams are encouraged to submit their highlights for publication here on the club's website.
First QuickStart Session Ends with Picnic
The first session of the El Cerrito Junior QuickStart league was completed with a picnic potluck and awards ceremony on Sunday, May 23. Good food was enjoyed by all as the last team matches were completed. Prizes and medals were awarded to all players. The coordinator, Margo Takemiya, promised all that the next session will have twice as many participants with the same dedicated coaches/assistant coaches who gave so much of their time and expertise. Thanks goes to all the parents who helped out as well.
QuickStart Program Gets Under Way
The new El Cerrito QuickStart Junior League began its inaugural season with the first match held at the Arlington Park tennis courts Sunday, March 28, 2010. With a signup of 31 players, we fielded five under-8-years-old teams and two 10-years-and-under teams.
The match was an unparalleled success, kind of like controlled chaos and loads of fun. Everyone got a chance to play as well as cheer on their favorite team.
Volunteer captains are Susan Brand, Barbara Guletz, Frank Salerno, Jan Bridges, Tana Hakanson, Marge Meuris, and Ellen DeNeef. They are assisted by volunteer co-captains Dick Bascom, David Liu, Joe Chang, April Tanalski, Joe Miller, LaNell Ostrander, Dawn Nakashima, Monica Kortz, Jose Martinez, Jennifer Tamplin, and a bevy of parent volunteers.
The next match will be held April 11 at the Arlington courts from 3 to 4 p.m. Come on out and get a look at our future tennis players!

Team News, December 2009
Super Senior Women's 3.5A
It was a fun season, but more fun when we won 3 matches out of 8. However, all the teams were very friendly and a good time was had by all!! It was no problem being the Captain of this team as all the ladies were ready, willing and available for the matches and filling in if necessary. Looking forward to 2010!!
The Red Hatters 3.5 W Teams would like to formally say Thank You to ECTC for providing numerous team competition events and grant stipends to its members.
Women's 3.5A Red Hatters
The Red Hatters ended their Adult league with 9 wins and 2 losses for the season. Our team goal was to win the Local Division and continue on to the Sectional Playoffs. We did manage to maintain our winning streak and qualified to play in the Local Playoffs. Our goal was denied when our opposition won the last match point at the 1st round Local Playoff. However, it was a very productive season for the Red Hatters to be in the top 4 teams in the 3.5 flight.
Thanks to the our players for their support. Mary Blume, Susan Brand, Lillian Carothers, Terry Cort, Ellen DeNeef, Ann Derosa, Ellen Hashiguchi, Hiroko Higuchi, Liz Holland, Marty Jewett, Lori Migistrado, Marge Meuris, Charlotte Moon, Karen Morioka, Dawn Nakashima, Bonnie Ng, Cathy Roberts, Sandy Shew, Lori Staley, Lynn Tsumoto, Rebecca Woolis, Liz Zapalac, and Norma Hom.
Senior Women's 3.5A Red Hatters
This season there are 7 teams in our flight — we are scheduled to play each team twice. We have completed 6 matches since the league started in October with 4 wins and 2 losses. If we continue to win the rest of our matches, we should be in a good position to play in the Local Playoffs. This season we have 20 players on our team roster. Mary Blume, Susan Brand, Lillian Carothers,Terry Cort, Ann Derosa, Ellen Hashiguchi, Hiroko Higuchi, Marty Jewett, Lori Migistrado, Marge Meuris, Charlotte Moon, Karen Morioka, Dawn Nakashima, Bonnie Ng, Cathy Roberts, Sandy Shew, Lori Staley, Lynn Tsumoto, Rebecca Woolis, and Norma Hom.
Senior Women's 3.0
The El Cerrito Women's 3.0 Senior team is off to a great start. Captained by Debra Aurora, and co-captained by Margo Takemiya, the team is one of six teams in the W3.0 league. We have played six games so far, and our record is 3 Wins, 3 losses. With a total of 15 matches scheduled for the season, the team hopes to continue their winning ways, as we have begun to play each team for a second time. There are 14 members on this team. They are: Barbara Bysiek, Carol Chihara, Amy Roth, Jeannette Klumb, Cathy Kenyon, Victoria Jennings, Merle Weiner, Rhoda Shaponik, Kathy Helliesen, Jan Hall, Norma Shah, Elena Gonzales, Diana Lynch, and Debra Aurora. Every member has played in 2 matches so far, and the hope is for everyone to play in at least 4.
Women's 6.5 Combo
The 2009 El Cerrito 6.5 Women's Combo team enjoyed a very successful season. Last year we had a 2-8 record; this year we improved to 7-4. The team was UNDEFEATED at home and was unbeatable under pressure. Our full 3rd set record was 5-0. Congratulations to our undefeated players — Sandy Shew and Ellen Heck. On to next year! Go El Cerrito!
Super Senior Men's 3.0
The Super Senior Team had a difficult start this past season losing their first three matches. We definitely picked up momentum and finished the season with a record of 7 victories and 5 defeats. We began the season with a roster of fifteen players. After two weeks, we had five players suffering season ending injuries. With ten available players, the process of selecting six players for the weekly matches was easy. We wish a speedy recovery to those injured players and hope to see them back on the courts soon.
The captain for the 2010 season is Gib Cattenach. It's only fitting that he lead us into the next season because he is one of our best players. Good luck Gib.
The BALL B-3 Team
The team is captained again this year by Merle Weiner and co-captain April Tanalski. We are a team of 21 dedicated and enthusiastic players, mostly returning veterans who play on multiple teams throughout the year. We were sad to see a few players move on at the end of last season, but we are delighted to welcome several new players to the mix. We are still welcoming new members, if you're interested.
We play at the Arlington Park courts every Thursday morning, 9-11, year round. Match season runs September through mid-March. We are well underway, having played 3 matches with another 9 in the season. So far, we are struggling a bit, but we've got great spirit and determination. We realize that the match schedule for the season has us playing against the top teams in the division early on. We're working our way towards the middle of the standings with lots of anticipation. Our attitude is onward and upward!
The Club Goes Green
El Cerrito Tennis Club supports our tennis teams in "going green."
We're asking our team captains to reduce the use of bottled water during home matches. ECTC has purchased a big Coleman container for this purpose and is encouraging the team captains to request the visiting teams to bring their own water containers to fill as needed.
ECTC also wants to bring to everyone's attention a tennis ball recycling program called Rebounces. Please visit their website at www.rebounces.com or call them at 888-630-5696 and learn more on how to avoid having old tennis balls end up in our landfills.
Of course there are many other ways to reuse those yellow fuzzy balls we like to chase. Here are a few ideas.
- Donate to schools to use under legs of chairs and tables to decrease the noise.
- Donate to senior centers or an assisted living facility to be used under legs of walkers.
- Check in at health clinics (physical therapy, chiropractic, massage); balls can be used for massages of feet and backs.
- To fluff up laundry, throw a couple of balls in the dryer.
- Cut in half and use to open stubborn jars.
- Stick at the end of a bicycle stand to prevent it from sinking in the mud or grass.
- Cut a slit and hide jewelry or valuables when going to the gym.
- Stick on your car antenna so you can find your car back easily in those big parking lots.
- Stick one on the end of a pole and use to remove cobwebs from the ceiling.
- Make a curved sander by wrapping a ball in sandpaper.
And there are probably many other creative ideas.
Your comments and ideas are always appreciated.
